2024 Science to Policy Summit

Conservation as climate mitigation: Using carbon programs to protect and restore ecosystems

Lacamas Lake Lodge, Camas, Washington

May 15, 2024

Wednesday, May 15, 2024, nearly 100 restoration practitioners, scientists, business leaders, public officials, and others attended the 13th Science to Policy Summit, joining both in person and virtually. They gathered to learn about and discuss how carbon markets can be used to enhance conservation and restoration initiatives.

Carbon programs create financial incentives to reduce emissions and have the potential to be integrated into a variety of conservation and restoration programs. The Summit included presentations on the latest research on carbon sequestration, how carbon programs are currently operating, and how they are evolving to meet new restoration and conservation initiatives.

The Honorable Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) offered opening remarks.

The presentations and Q&A sessions were recorded, and can be watched below. Presentation slides from the summit are included in agenda order. We opened with explanations of the current state of carbon markets in the states of Washington and Oregon. Lightning talks then highlighted current research on the Columbia River estuary and the impact of its wetlands on greenhouse gas emissions. We then moved into our afternoon panel, which featured practitioners such as local conservation organization and businesses in the carbon market industry.

Morning Session

Attendees got the chance to paddle one of our two Big Canoes on Lacamas Lake over lunchtime. It was a gorgeous day to be out on the water!
