To carry out our scientific mission, the Estuary Partnership and its partners continually work to identify, assess, and respond to trends in the lower Columbia River and estuary. In addition to our on-the-ground Ecosystem Monitoring and Restoration Effectiveness Monitoring work, which helps inform these efforts, we also carry out a variety of additional research projects to fill other needed knowledge gaps. Pioneering Study to Explore Carbon Methane Flux in Columbia River Estuary Wetlands

A new study is underway examining the role of Columbia River estuary wetlands in global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In partnership with Oregon Health & Science University, and Portland State University, the Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership ’s Soil Carbon and Methane Study of Columbia River Estuary Wetlands evaluates the dual role of estuary wetlands in both storing and emitting gases including carbon dioxide and methane.

Dr. Chanda Littles

Chanda is a Coastal Ecologist with an interest in estuarine ecology, habitat restoration, and environmental stewardship. She holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Ecology from the University of Florida. She is most interested in applied research that can inform decision-making, but her work to date has spanned topics including population biology, seagrass ecology, wetland policy/regulation, coastal ecosystem services, environmental compliance, and habitat restoration. In her current position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps), she serves as the Corps’ Science Lead in the Columbia

Katarina Lunde

Katarina joined the Estuary Partnership in 2025 as a Research Scientist, supporting the Ecosystem Monitoring Program and Action Effectiveness Monitoring Program. She has a background in plant ecology, with experience researching plant population ecology, biological invasions, and plant-insect interactions. Her past work includes assessing impacts of biological control agents on a native host plant in the Oregon Cascades and Coast Range. She has extensive experience with remote sensing and GIS data analysis, including using lidar, multispectral and hyperspectral imagery to classify tree species

About the Estuary Partnership

The Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership is a non-profit, a National Estuary Program, and a collection of dedicated scientists, educators, and community members who are passionate about the Columbia River. We focus on the lower 146 miles of the Columbia River, from Bonneville Dam to the Pacific Ocean, including the tidally influenced portions of tributaries in that area. The watershed includes 28 cities, nine counties, and 45 school districts within the states of Oregon and Washington.
