Government Island (in the Columbia River northeast of Portland) is a series of islands accessible by boat only. There are two docks and a floating tie-up on the north side of the main island. A 42.4 acre man-made island a few minutes paddle from downtown St. Helens, just downstream of the Multnomah Channel and Columbia River confluence. The island is a mix of cottonwood forest and grassy areas. The City of St. Helens recently renovated the island and operates a campground, open from March through October. The camp host can also accept day-of walk up or phone reservations, if spots are available.
