Steigerwald Lake is a US Fish & Wildlife Service National Wildlife Refuge situated along the banks of the Columbia near Washougal, Washington, at the Gateway to the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Through a collaborative partnership, the lands and waters of the Refuge and the Columbia River were recently reconnected. Elaine Placido, DPA

Elaine joined the Estuary Partnership in the summer of 2020. She comes to the Partnership with twenty-plus years of local government and non-profit experience, Elaine is also a veteran of the US Coast Guard. Her family has a farm in Columbia County where they specialize in Boer goats. In her free time, she likes to travel and spend time outside. She is also a dedicated volunteer and leads a 4H livestock club, serves on her local school board and on her local planning commission. Pioneering Study to Explore Climate Change Mitigation in Columbia River Estuary Wetlands

A new study is underway examining the role of Columbia River estuary wetlands in global efforts to combat climate change. In partnership with Oregon Health & Science University, and Portland State University, the Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership ’s Soil Carbon and Methane Study of Columbia River Estuary Wetlands evaluates the dual role of estuary wetlands in both storing and emitting greenhouse gases.

Kristen Klever

Kristen started with the Estuary Partnership in spring of 2024. She's joining the Education Team as a leader on the Big Canoes and field trips, plantings, and community events. Kristen brings over twenty years of experience in environmental education nonprofits, centered in the communities of East Portland. She's worked for OMSI, MESD Outdoor School, Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center, Metro, SUN, varied parks and recreation departments, and grassroots nonprofits. She volunteers for Portland Public Schools, local mutual aid, community youth programs, and has served on and chaired several

Chanda Littles

Chanda is a Coastal Ecologist with an interest in estuarine ecology, habitat restoration, and environmental stewardship. She holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Ecology from the University of Florida. She is most interested in applied research that can inform decision-making, but her work to date has spanned topics including population biology, seagrass ecology, wetland policy/regulation, coastal ecosystem services, environmental compliance, and habitat restoration. In her current position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps), she serves as the Corps’ Science Lead in the Columbia
